Why Resolvesm

Resolve strives for the ultimate success of sustained behavior change with its clients.  Coaching is a science-based approach to facilitating these long-term changes.  Over the years, coaching has been consistently recognized by behaviorists, as one of the best tools for achieving success.

Wellness coaches are distinguished from other types of coaches by their background in health and fitness.  Unlike practioners with specific areas of expertise (e.g. trainers, exercise instructors, chiropractors), wellness coaches are able to take a comprehensive approach to wellness including health risks, weight management, stress, work/life balance.

Resolve’s coaches are wellness & fitness professionals such as personal trainers, nutritionists, physical therapists, and nurses. Their coaching training integrates multiple psychological theories, such as Prochaska’s Transtheoretical Model for Behavioral Change (TTM) and Braksick’s Continuous Learning Group, to influence behavioral change and long-term adherence to principles of healthy living.

Three different formats for coaching are available within the Resolve program.

  • One-on-one coaching: personal sessions on a weekly basis.  Each coaching conversation is approximately 30-45 minutes.
  • Group coaching: groups of 15 people or fewer.  Calls are arranged at a mutually convenient time on a weekly basis.  Goals can be individual as well as group-focused.
  • Community coaching: groups up to 50 people. Large-format calls are scheduled for weekly call-in’s.  Participants may be related by employer, industry, or special interests.

The Coaching Process

One of the most important aspects of coaching is that the client is owner of the results. The goal is to guide individuals to take responsibility for their own wellness.  From selecting a coach to setting the agenda for the regular follow-up sessions, the client has the opportunity to maximize the outcome by taking the driver’s seat.

All sessions are private and confidential. Because the scope of coaching includes the many dimensions of wellness, both client and coach must feel free to talk without inhibition.

Coaching sessions are conducted over the telephone.  This allows for greater focus with fewer distractions.  More importantly, clients and coaches find it easier and more efficient to schedule regular meetings during the week without the need to travel.  Also, clients have broader access to a range of coaches without concern of geography.

The typical experience with 1:1 coaching is:

  1. Client selects a coach from the Resolve team
  2. Client completes a pre-session questionnaire, food diary and exercise journal for at least 3-days prior to the first call
  3. Client and coach meet by phone for an initial session that lasts approximately 90-minutes.  During the first session, a wellness vision is created as well as 90-day goals.
  4. Prior to each follow up call, the client prepares by reviewing “prep questions”
  5. Client and coach meet weekly by phone at a mutually convenient time to review progress, discuss strategies for overcoming obstacles and establish sub-goals for the upcoming week.
  6. Every 90 days, the coach and client review and assess the relationship

Participants in both group and community coaching will experience a similar intake process; however, the goal-setting and weekly follow-up’s may not be as personalized.  The preparatory expectations and timeframe commitment are the same.
